when most people think of burgers and fries, the first thing that comes to mind is fast food. just because most fast food joints serve this type of food, it doesn’t mean that all burgers and fries have to come from said purveyors of food served quickly. i think that the best place to get a burger is at home, on the bbq. however, when you’re eating out, the next best thing would be to find a diner.
maamm boluc is a quaint little neighbourhood diner is known for their home-styled comfort food. from all-day breakfasts to pâté chinois, you will surely find something that hits the spot. never empty, this little restaurant with the long countertop and chalkboard menu greets families, young hipsters, and older folks with a warm smile.
being picky when it comes to comfort food, i have only tried two items from their extensive menu. still on my quest for the best burger and poutine that montreal has to offer, i ordered the suisse burger and the classic poutine.
the suisse burger is a thin beef patty sitting on top of a bed of coleslaw and topped with nicely melted swiss cheese. the patty may be thin but with all the dressings, i had to really open wide to take a bite. while it may not be the best burger, it is above average. the meat wasn’t dry and the whole burger actually had a taste to it. i especially like the addition of coleslaw as it gave it a bit of crunch and tang. i also love the fact that their all-dressed does not include mayonnaise. i never did understand why people put mayo on everything in montreal!
this place makes a good classic poutine. they may serve variations of the québec staple, but i consider that anything other than the classic is blasphemous! that’s just me though. i’ve heard whispers that the poutine bourguignonne, with its beef, onions, mushrooms, wine, and garlic is something to experience. sounds interesting, but i will stick to my usual order. the classic is simply home-style fries covered in cheese curds and brown gravy. the fries are the “dirty fries” that i love – freshly-cut, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside with a slight sweet taste. the cheese curds melted nicely under the hot gravy, but still retained their form and squeakiness. that is, i am told, the mark of fresh cheese curds. the gravy, like at all other places, is prepared from a mix. it is nothing special except for the fact that it wasn’t as salty as the ones at other diners and did not taste like it had ketchup added to it, which is a bonus in my book.
also available for order is san marco spruce beer. i have never tried it myself, but i am told that it tastes like trees. whatever floats your boat, right?
maam bolduc is a cute little diner that serves good burgers and, what is in my opinion, one of the better poutines in town. when you are craving a poutine, you can’t really go wrong here.

i worked at this place for a while and found treatment in the kitchen to be quite violent and disagreeable. maybe that’s part of the greasy macho allure of the place, but until i get my damn paycheck from them (which is weeks late) i encourage you not to eat their shit.
